Teacher Sophia

Raised by two musicians, Sophia grew up in a deeply creative and encouraging musical environment. From a young age she studied piano, oboe, and voice, actively contributing to the musical life of her community through choral and orchestral performance. She holds a degree in Vocal Performance from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, where she focused both on performance and pedagogy. In terms of performance, Sophia has always been drawn to contemporary music. Her artistic goal is to support local, living composers in order to strengthen the musical fabric of her communities.

Having recently moved to the Bay Area, she hopes to achieve this goal both in her performances and in her classroom. She finds the act of creating art in a safe and encouraging environment integral to the developing mind, and is dedicated to cultivating this space in Music Together® classrooms for the next generation of creators.

"Music is communal and communicative. It is meant to be shared and to be expressed without restriction. I have always felt that communities are stronger when they create art together. In my classroom, I want to foster a multi-generational community where children and adults alike can find their voices. The act of making music and playing together translates far beyond the classroom walls and empowers us all to be better members of our larger communities. I always look forward to exploring this philosophy with the families in my class!"
