Makeups,
Starting Late, Cancellation:
What
happens if I miss a class? You can make up 2 missed classes
per semester (one of them can be a weekend class). Current registered parents may go to our
Makeup Class Instructions for full details. Makeup
classes cannot be carried on to another semester and are not transferrable
to another family.
Please email us before registering online to find out how to obtain the pro-rated feeWhat if my child has
a runny nose or had a fever?
If your child isn't feeling
well and you think he/she may be contagious, please keep them home.
A runny nose with mucus that is not clear, or a fever within 24-48 hours before class is a sign that your child is contagious. Please
respect the health of the other families in your class by not exposing
them. You can utilize two makeups (instructions above).
If I start late, can you pro-rate the session? While your child(ren) would most benefit from the Music Together® program by attending the entire session, we appreciate that some families do not hear about our classes until after the semester has commenced. If that is the case for you, please email us before registering online to find out how to obtain the coupon code for the pro-rated fee.
The pro-ration cannot be combined with other discounts such as Pregnancy Plan.
How late into a session can I start? In 10-week semesters we do not take any new registrations beyond week 6; in 12-week semesters we do not take any new registrations beyond week 7; in 7 or 8-week semesters we do not take any new registrations beyond week 4.
Why can't I enroll for a partial session? The intimate creative energy that fosters learning in our program develops over the course of a semester. The tuition is based on a complete cycle of classes, getting to know the songs and each other. Beginning the course after more than half of the classes have already passed can be disconcerting for the student and disruptive to the class.
What happens if I
need to cancel the semester? You can cancel your registration
for any reason before your FIRST CLASS. You will be charged
a $30 cancellation fee and refunded the rest of your tuition. If
you have taken materials already, an additional $40 will be withheld.
We regret that there
can be no refunds after the first week of class. Your spot in class
has been sold and cannot necessarily be resold. Many classes are
full and people have been turned away when the spot is booked.
What is your mailing address? Music Together of SF, PO Box 371075, Montara, CA 94037
What payment methods do you allow? The sole method of payment is online via credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover). Please do not ask class teachers to take care of your registration needs. Only the office deals with payment or registration queries.
Can
Pregnant Moms Register for Half the Session? Yes, if you are
expecting during our session and are not sure how many classes you
will be able to attend. You can pay for half a session plus materials
and registration, then choose whichever 5 classes work for your
delivery timing. Inform the office of your request and we will let you know the discounted pricing. This is subject to availability in classes. Contact the Office Administrator
to elect this plan. This plan cannot be combined with any pro-rating.
About
the Lessons:
How long are the lessons? The classes are 45 minutes long.
How many classes in
a session? There are 12 classes in the Fall session. There
are 10 in each of the Winter and Spring sessions. Summer session lasts 7
weeks.
How many children
are in each class? There is normally a maximum of 12 children
enrolled in each class. Occasionally there may be one or two extra
families doing a preview or making up a missed class. Each child
or set of siblings is accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
What is the age range
of the classes? All
classes are mixed from 0 through 5 years, unless otherwise stated.
The activities are Parent/Child interactive so mixed ages are not
an issue. We find Mixed Age classes to be extremely beneficial for
early musical development in a variety of ways.
There is a Babies
class for infants under eight months. Many families with infants under eight months may enjoy being in a class with infants only. Activities are tailored to babes-in-arms and it can be a nice way to meet other new families or families with infants. Our Mixed Ages classes are very accommodating of families with infants as well, you may
prefer to enroll your baby in the mixed age classes instead.
There is a Big Kids™ classes
for children ages 4 to 7 years old. If you have a four- to seven-year-old who has attended several semesters of Music Together,
he or she may be ready for one of these classes. Please contact us if you believe your 4+ year old is ready and we may arrange an assessment. Rule of thumb, your child should be singing in tune with accurate rhythm and be interested in simple leadership activities. Bring your child for the
same outstanding music with some different kinds of activities-rhythm
improvisation, introduction to notation concepts, independent singing,
dance improvisation, and dramatic play. Teachers work with individual
skill levels and interests.
Click on Types of Classes for more info.
What do you do in
the classes? It's
45 minutes of fun, informal music making and creating. Adults and
children together sing and dance to songs, play instruments, look
at pictures in our songbooks, make up silly rhymes for our songs,
sing tonal and rhythmic patterns and experience a wide range of
rhythmic and melodic musical variety. You will also join your teacher
singing as she plays her keyboard, recorder, guitar, or flute (depending
on your teacher). Live music making rather than passive listening
is the name of our game!
How can I preview
a class with my child? You may preview a class during a regular
session or, at the beginning of each session, we hold Demo Classes. We do not allow drop-ins, your demo class must be arranged with our office.
Click for the Current Demo Class Schedule for more info. If you've missed this semester's demos and there
is room in a class, you can visit the class in session
as a demo. If you join, you will pay from that class forward, if
not, you may take it as a free class.

What kind of instruments
do you use? We
have a wide variety of unpitched instruments such as Drums, Triangles,
Tamborines, Bells, Shakers and Rhythm sticks. The reason for unpitched
instruments is so that the children will never feel they are playing
a "wrong" note and can join in however they like. You too will be
playing along on these instruments! We also use chime bars pitched
to match the songs and we dance with scarves and other props! The
teachers play keyboard, guitar, flute, recorder, banjo, accordion,
sruti, autoharp, etc to accompany the songs as well as using some
recorded selections.
My child probably
won't sit still for 45 minutes... Music
Together classes maintain an informal atmosphere in the classroom
and we do not expect children of this young age to sit still throughout
the whole class. Normally we have about 3 or 4 activities during
the class where we all get up and move around the room. Also children
are free to wander about the circle or around the room during the
class as long as they are obviously still mentally engaged in the
activities. Parents are free to take the activity over to their
child to engage them or try to bring them back to the circle.
Can I bring my husband/grandma/aunt, etc? Yes. Any
number of adults can attend with a registered child but they should be prepared to participate actively in the class (not just stand watching as it disturbs the tone of the class).
Do you do the same
songs every week? No,
each week we do about 10-12 songs from the 25-30 song collection.
So each week we do mostly familiar songs with a few new ones until we have covered the whole session's collection.
Do you have the same
songs each session? No, there are 9 different sessions of material so families can
take the course for 3 years and not repeat the material.
Why do I need the Materials? Your class registration includes the use of our materials which are rotated over a three year period and are essential to your family's participation. Playing the CD in the car, at home and in class creates a rich continuity for your child to grow with. The song collections are chosen carefully from around the world and are updated periodically so it is essential that new materials are taken each semester.
