Holly van Hoey

Teacher Holly grew up very shy and in a non-musical family, but fell in love with singing at an early age. Her favorite songs to sing were those of the Disney princesses and characters she would watch with her mom and her sisters. Singing helped build her confidence and quickly became a way to bring joy to her family and friends. From there, Holly joined choirs and lived to perform on stage as a means to escape her innate introverted personality. Music was a way for her to break through her fears and connect with others. It was inspirational and fulfilling in her young life, and she is thankful and honored to share music with the children and families she teaches each week. Holly is currently in her final year of study in music education at San Francisco State University with hopes of continuing on to teach private voice as well as young children. She sings opera mostly, but is embracing other styles outside of her classical music bubble. In addition to her school choirs, Holly currently sings with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and California Opera Association. Though primarily a vocalist, Holly also plays piano, ukulele, and a little bit of a handful of different instruments as she strives to go more in depth with her music.

"Though I am a performing musician, I honestly believe the most important and beautiful functions of music cannot be captured in performance. Music builds families, bonds, and communities and can be made and enjoyed by everyone. It is a language and a heartbeat that connects us all, and it is so important for kids to experience music early on in their development. This is why I love the Music Together® program. It accepts and embraces that all children learn in different ways and have different comfort levels which I feel is missing in many similar programs. I understand that singing can be an extremely vunerable experience for some, and I try to provide my families the space, understanding, and time to feel comfortable making music in their own unique way. Perfection is not expected nor desired. My primary focus in my teaching is to create a safe, fun environment where every child is free to explore and experience the classes however they choose. I try to help my grownups understand that they are their child's musical model, and if they are singing, dancing, and having fun, their children will feel comfortable and want to join in! It is that simple. We were all born with the ability to make and enjoy music, and I am constantly reminded of this when watching the children and their loved ones in my classes. It is truly special to watch the unplanned musical moments that happen when the entire class is singing and having fun. That is the spirit of music, and I treasure being a part of each child's musical journey."
